Why Outlet Spacing in Kitchens and Baths Is So Specific
The NEC requires receptacles on specific spacing in kitchens and bathrooms. The rules look fussy until you understand what each one is preventing.
Kitchen receptacles
• Small-appliance branch circuits. Two separate 20A circuits for kitchen counter receptacles (no shared circuit with lights, dishwasher, or disposal). Why? So you can run a toaster and a coffee maker on different circuits without tripping breakers.
• Counter receptacle spacing. Receptacles every 4 feet maximum, and no point along the counter more than 2 feet from one. Why? So a small appliance with a 2-foot cord reaches a receptacle anywhere on the counter.
• Islands and peninsulas. At least one receptacle for islands 12 inches by 24 inches or larger.
• GFCI required. All kitchen counter receptacles must be GFCI-protected. The dishwasher and disposal often are too, depending on edition adopted.
Bathroom receptacles
• GFCI required. All bathroom receptacles must be GFCI-protected.
• Dedicated circuit. A bathroom needs at least one 20A circuit for receptacles, separate from lighting.
• Receptacle near the basin. Within 3 feet of the outside edge of the basin.
• No receptacles in the bathtub or shower zone. No receptacles or switches within reach of someone in the tub or shower (typically 3 feet horizontal, 8 feet vertical).
Why the rules feel arbitrary
They're not. Each rule prevents a specific accident: dropped appliance into water, overloaded counter circuit, hair dryer just out of reach. Every code rule has a story behind it.
What this means for you
If you're remodeling and the new layout doesn't put receptacles where the code says, that's not negotiable. Fight the layout, not the code.
