What pad does

How to read a pad spec
Two numbers matter: density (pounds per cubic foot) and thickness (inches).
• For residential use, density of 6-8 lb/cuft is standard; 8+ is upgraded.
• Thickness of 3/8 inch is typical; 1/2 inch is plush but only for low-traffic.
A premium-feeling pad that's too thick can void carpet warranties — manufacturers usually spec a maximum thickness. Read the carpet warranty card and match.
Memory foam, rebond, urethane
• Rebond foam is the most common — multicolored, made from recycled foam, durable.
• Frothed urethane is denser, more expensive, longer-lasting.
• Memory foam pads are luxurious but can void warranties.
• Slab rubber is for commercial; almost never specified in homes.
What this means for you
Don't let the pad be an afterthought. Ask which pad your installer is quoting and check that it meets the carpet manufacturer's spec. Upgrading from a basic 6 lb pad to an 8 lb pad costs a small fraction of the project and dramatically extends the carpet's life.
