A gutter system has three jobs: catch water, move it down, and discharge it away from the foundation. Most gutter complaints come from one of these jobs being underdesigned.

Sizing

Standard residential gutters are 5-inch K-style. Steeper or larger roofs need 6-inch or more. Half-round gutters look great but carry less water than K-style of the same diameter.

The math: roof square footage and slope drive how much water hits the gutter in an inch of rain. Undersized gutters overflow in any real storm, regardless of installer skill.

Slope

Gutters should slope toward downspouts at roughly 1/16 inch per foot. Less and water pools and breeds mosquitoes; more is visible and looks bad. Long gutter runs need either a steeper slope or a midpoint downspout.

Downspout count

One downspout per 40 feet of gutter is a common rule, but it's a minimum. Real-world performance is better with one every 25-30 feet. Corners and inside angles concentrate water and need their own outlets.

Discharge

The downspout has to deposit water at least 5 feet from the foundation, ideally onto a graded surface that carries it further away. Splash blocks are minimum; underground extensions to daylight are better. Discharging next to the foundation is the leading cause of basement water problems no one mentions in the gutter quote.

What this means for you

A gutter system that costs more isn't always better. A gutter system that's properly sized, sloped, and discharged is.
