Tree Pruning: Timing, Technique, and What a Real Arborist Does Differently

A bad pruning can damage or kill a tree. A good pruning extends its life and beauty. The difference is the cuts — and what an arborist understands that a landscaper might not.

What good pruning looks like

Branch collar respected. The slight swelling where a branch meets the trunk is the tree's natural compartmentalization zone. Cuts just outside the collar heal correctly; cuts flush with the trunk damage the trunk wood.

Three-cut technique on large branches. A relief cut under the branch first, a removal cut, then the final cut at the collar — preventing tearing of the bark down the trunk.

No more than 25% live canopy removed in a season. More than that stresses the tree; many states have ordinances limiting the percentage.

No topping. Indiscriminately cutting back the top of a tree to a uniform height creates weak regrowth and shortens the tree's life dramatically.

When to prune

Most species: dormant season (late winter, before spring growth). Some species (oak, maple) have specific timing to prevent disease transmission. Storm damage repair is anytime.
