Should You Replace Your Furnace and AC at the Same Time?

Your furnace is 18, your AC is 14, and one of them just died. Replace just the broken one, or both? The honest answer depends on four specific conditions.

Replace together if any of these are true

The remaining equipment is also old. If your furnace died at 20 and the AC is 15, the AC has 3-5 years left at best. Doing both now means one labor charge instead of two.

The new equipment is a matched system. Modern variable-speed and communicating systems work best when both sides are from the same family. Mixing a new high-efficiency AC with an old single-stage furnace blower throttles your investment.

The refrigerant is changing. R-410A is being phased out in favor of A2L refrigerants (R-454B, R-32). New ACs use the new refrigerants; old systems used the old. Mixing across the boundary requires more components than you might expect.

You're upgrading the duct system. If you're touching the ducts, the system was opened up — replacing the air handler at the same time is the lowest-cost moment.

Replace separately if all of these are true

• The remaining equipment is under 10 years old

• It's a standard single-stage system (no communicating controls)

• The duct system is in good shape and not being touched

• Cash flow matters more than long-term efficiency
