Why Your Underlayment Matters More Than the Shingle Brand on Top
Every roofing conversation starts with the shingle — brand, color, how many years are printed on the wrapper. The layer underneath barely comes up, and it quietly does a lot of the work. Here is what your roofer already knows about underlayment, so the two of you can have a better conversation.
What the layer under your shingles is doing
Underlayment is the continuous sheet rolled out over the roof decking before a single shingle goes down. You see it for about a day, and then never again.
Shingles are the weather surface — they shed the overwhelming majority of the water that hits your roof. Underlayment handles the exceptions: rain driven sideways under a course by a 40-mph gust, water backing up behind an ice dam at a cold eave, and the stretch between tear-off and the last course when the roof is dried in but not yet covered.
A roof is a system, not a product. The shingle takes the weather; the underlayment takes the exceptions.
The three types your roofer will mention
• Asphalt-saturated felt (#15 or #30). The traditional roll — paper saturated with asphalt. Inexpensive, and it is what most older roofs have under them. It also tears in wind and does not love sitting exposed for more than a day or two.
• Synthetic underlayment. A woven polypropylene sheet. Lighter, far stronger in the hand, safer for the crew to walk, and it holds up if weather pushes the shingles back a few days. It is the default on most quality re-roofs now.
• Self-adhered membrane. Peel-and-stick, often called ice-and-water. It bonds to the deck and seals around the nails driven through it — the only one of the three that closes its own fastener holes. It costs the most, so it goes where it earns its keep rather than across the whole roof.
Where the money actually belongs
When a roof leaks, it is rarely in the middle of an open field of shingles. It is where the roof changes direction, where the slope goes shallow, or where something comes through it. That is where an experienced roofer puts the budget:
• Eaves. The bottom edge stays coldest, so in colder regions that is where melt refreezes and backs water uphill under the shingles. Common industry practice is self-adhered membrane from the edge up past the line of the exterior wall.
• Valleys. Two planes of roof funnel everything they catch into one channel — high volume, slower drainage, debris that holds moisture.
• Penetrations. Chimneys, vent stacks, skylights. Flashing does the primary work; membrane underneath gives that detail a second chance.
What this means for you
When your roofer walks you through the proposal, ask two easy questions: what underlayment is going across the field, and what is going at the eaves, valleys, and penetrations. You are not checking up on anybody — you are asking the one question that lets a good roofer explain the part of the number that separates their proposal from the next one. Most of them are glad somebody asked.
It also reframes the budget conversation. Moving up two tiers of shingle mostly buys appearance and a longer wrapper warranty. Improving what goes underneath at the eaves and valleys usually costs less and buys protection exactly where roofs leak.
What contractors should know
Underlayment is one of the easiest parts of the job to explain and one of the most persuasive. Two minutes on the tailgate with a scrap of synthetic in one hand and a piece of peel-and-stick in the other does more than another page of specifications.
The layers nobody can see later
Underlayment is covered work. A day after it goes down it is under a roof, and the only record that it went in as specified is the photos taken while it was still open.
